Eek, What to Wear??

So here we are on Halloween. It’s the first full day I’m back in the country after the honeymoon, and I’m sad to report that The Husband and I don’t get his kids for the holiday, so there’s not a lot of happy dress up talk going on in our house. While I am very sad not to have the kids, I am slightly less sad that I don’t have to go through the angst of coming up with a Halloween costume. I find this incredibly stressful. There is a tremendous pressure to be clever, particularly when one is a writer and/or claims to be an intellectual. It may be self-imposed, but it’s still there.

My default costume was adapted from a reference in the movie The Addams Family (teehee). I wear regular clothes (hooray!) and don’t carry anything special. When people ask me what I am, I solemnly reply: “I’m a serial killer. We look like everyone else.”

How great is that??

Today I Think We Shall Have Some Photo Poetry

Okay, I confess, I have no idea what to write about today. I am scheduling this in advance, as I am on the honeymoon (which I already mentioned – check back a couple of days, I can’t give you a link remotely!), and I am battling a cold and I am simply not feeling terrifically idea-full. I have pages of suggestions of writing exercises and topics, but none of them are calling my name in a voice that refuses to be ignored, so I’m going off the reservation on a light-hearted bit o’ fun instead of doing something serious.

I have decided to take some of the pictures that The Husband has taken (he’s a fabulous photographer with his own website business with his dad, by the way, check it out!) and use them to write some poems. Poetry is unlikely to ever be a publishing thing for me, but I find it fun and easy and a good way to practice writing within strict (usually stripped-down linguistic) parameters. So I hope you enjoy these – and even if you don’t like the poems, well, the pictures are cool! ;)

Guest Post: A Handful of Thoughts, Courtesy of Author Tamera Lawrence

Today’s guest post consists of a handful of thoughts (originally presented as blog posts) by author Tamera Lawrence whose novel The Pond is now available. Enjoy!

Subliminal events that evoke feelings of “Hometown”

Summers always remind me of celebrations and gatherings especially when I was a kid. The frequency just seemed to naturally come in quick succession. There’s Mayday, the last day of school, summer camp, Fourth of July, country fairs and family vacations. All of these events make me think of warm weather and good times.

Hooray for me AGAIN I said!

So as I’ve mentioned, I recently got married – hooray for me! – and now, finally, at last, comes the day I’ve been waiting for almost as much as the wedding day: the day we leave for our honeymoon!!

WOOHOO INDEED, she proclaimed!

We are going to Aruba. The Husband (teehee – it makes me giggle like crazy to write that, still!) has never been there. I used to go there by myself for a week every year when I was working at the pharmaceutical company. I had first been there a number of years before, courtesy of The Best Friend (who was a travel agent at the time and got us an amazing deal), and I loved it. When I was working at The Company That Must Not Be Named, I was so miserable that I needed a place to recuperate and relax, and remembering Aruba fondly, I chose that one year as my destination. I had such an amazing time and it was so exactly perfectly wondrously what I needed that I went back year after year.

I took a lot of grief for this.

Book Review and GIVEAWAY: What About the Boy? by Stephen Gallup

Today’s Book Review Tuesday post is special – What About the Boy? is a book that came to my attention through the author’s response to a request I put out for guest posts. That in itself wouldn’t ordinarily be all that unusual or special – many an author writes promotional material in an attempt to gain publicity for their book. But this book itself is special, as is its author. You see, this isn’t just another story or work of fiction – this is the author’s own story. Well, his and his son Joseph’s. And it’s a beautiful and difficult and moving and scary and lovely story all wrapped up in one three-hundred and seventy-six page package.

By the way, a complimentary review copy was generously provided by the author. And the author and his publisher are generously also providing a giveaway copy. But more details will come later…
